Excursion to Gola del Ter and Aiguamolls
The Gola del Ter is the current mouth of the Ter river in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí. At the beginning of the. XVI century the Ter flowed into 10 km further north, in the municipality of L'Escala. This fact was due to the battles between Ponce-Hugo IV, Count of Empúries, and Jaime II the righteous, King of the Crown of Catalonia and Aragon and Count of Barcelona. The count wanted the river to belong to his county and Torroella to be part of the county of Barcelona, so he cut the river as it passed through Verges (which was part of the county of Empúries) and so he managed to make it flow into L'Escala and finally not be his property.
